ABOUT NATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

The National Medical University, a Leading scientific and Treatment-and-prophylactic centre of this country, marked its 150th foundation anniversary in the year 1991. The University releases yearly near 1,000 qualified specialists for the independent Ukraine and for other countries of Europe, Africa, Asia, Southern America.

The Medical University is wide known owing to its famous scientists, whose developments performed at the level of world standards are used widely in practical public health care. Among the University's teaching staff, there are 9 Members and Corresponding Members of the Academy of Sciences. 28 Honoured Scientists and Honoured Workers of higher school of the Ukraine, 45 laureates of State Prizes, 137 Doctors, of Sciences, 113 Professors, 222 Docents, 554 Candidates of Sciences. At present, above 6,000 students and near 300 postgraduates and interns are studying at this higher educational establishment.

Over the years of its existence, the University has trained some 60,000 physicians, among them above 1,000 for foreign countries.

The National Medical University was established in 1841 as Medical Faculty of the St. Vladimir University. Its first professor and dean was a disciple of great M. 1. Pirogov, talented surgeon and ophthalmologist V. 0. Karavayev.

Through the University's 150-year history, there have been set up the well known schools of morphologists (A. P. Valler, V. A. Bets, F. A. Stefanis), pathologists (G. M. Minkh, N. A. Khrzhonshchevsky, V. K. Vysokovych, V. V. Pid-vysotsky), therapists (V. P. Obraztsov, F. G. Yanovsky, M. D. Strazhesko, M. M. Gubergritz, F. A. Udintsev, V. M. lvanov, V. Kh.Vasylenko). General acceptance in the world of medical science has been gained by the works of anatomists M. S. Spirov, A. A. Sushko, A. I. Sviridov on evolutional morphology of the lymphatic system; physiologists — on bioelectric phenomena, the processes of an organism's fatigue and recovery (V. Yu. Chagovets, D. S. Vorontsov, G. V. Folbort); pathologists — on the physiological system of connective tissue (E. A. Tatarinov, E. I. Chaika); surgeons — on operational interventions in organs of the abdominal cavity (N. M. Volkovich, A. P. Krymov, M. I. Kolomiychenko, 1. N. Ishchenko); obstetricians/gynecologists — on the prevention of maternal and infant mortality (G. F. Pisemsky, A. E. Lurye, N. S. Baksheyev, E. N. Khohol); hygienists — on the environment protection (A. N. Marzeev, G. Kh. Shakhbazyan, D. N. Kalyuzhny); epidemiologists — on mechanisms involved in the transmission of pathologic infections (L. V. Gromashevsky); dermatologists — on diagnosis and treatment of chronic dermatoses (M. I. Stukovenkov, P. V. Nikolsky, A. I. Kartamishev, I. I. Pototsky); neuropathologists — on viscero-refrectory pathology of the nervous system (M. M. Lapynsky, B. M. Mankivsky); dentists — on prevention and treatment of canes and maxillofa-cial deformities (I..O. Novik, A. I. Betelman).

World-wide recognition has been gained by such famous developments of the University's coryphaei, as the creation of a science about cerebral cytoarchitectonics and the description of giant pyramidal cortical cells (V. 0. Bets); the description of coronary thrombosis and myocardial infarction, made for the first time in the world during patient's lifetime (V. P. Obraztsov, M. D. Strazhesko); the development of ionic theory for bioelectrical phenomena in living tissues (V. Yu. Chagovets), etc.

Within the Universit's walls, there have been conducted out numerous works of the world priority in various fields of medical science: the first antidiphtheric serum production and implementation (0. D. Pavlovsky); transplantation of the skin, mucous membrane and cadaveric cornea (0. S. Yatsenko, K. M. Sapezhko, 0. F. Shymanovsky); the creation of an experimental model.for the autoimmune process (V. K. Zindeman); the development and aprobation of electroencephalography (V. V. Pravdich-Nemynsky) and numerous other well-known scientific and clinical developments.

Being the founder of as cientific school of hygienists in the Ukraine, he has raised 22 Doctors and 33 Candidates in Medicine, who presently head scientific and educational institutions. He is the author of 320 scientific works, including 30 monographs, text-books and 10 certificater for inventions

 

In 1853, there was built the Anatomic Theatre of Medical Faculty — one of the world best anatomical theatres for that time.

The Alexander Hospital opened in 1875 had served as a basic clinic of Medical Faculty. In 1885, a separate block for Surgery and Therapeutic Clinics was built, while in 1888 — that tor Obstetrical Clinic.

In 1920, on the basis of St. Vladimir University's Medical Faculty, Medical Institute for Women and Ukrainian State University, there was established Kiev State Medical Academy which was renamed as Kiev Medical Institute in the end of 1921. The Institute had two Faculties, Medical and Stomatological, at that time. The Morphological block was erected in 1954. The Sanitary-and-Hygienic and Physicochemical blocks were handed over for use in 1967 and 1985, respectively. In 1992, the National Medical University has been formed on the basis of Kiev Medical Institute.

Nowadays, the National Medical University is a big educational, scientific and treatment-and-prophylactic centre which is being constantly developed.

Future physicians are being trained at Therapeutical and Stomatological Faculties. (V. P. Shyrobokov,. Prorector for teaching work, Corresponding Member of the Ukrainian Acad. Sci.). Newly opened are Pharmaceutical and Military Medical Faculties. The Department for preliminary training has been functioning successfully for several years. Recently, the Medical Lyceum has been formed. Specialists from the Ukraine and other countries

may improve their education at Faculty for Teachers' Advanced Training. The University also trains specialists of higher qualification through clinical internship and postgraduate training.

The University has 72 Chairs. Actually, each of them is a scientific centre, while 41 Chairs and 4 clinical courses, which are based on 117 hospitals and scientific-research institutes, perform treatment-and-prophylactic and scientific work at the up-to-date level. Some Chairs and appropriate scientific-research institutes have formed joint educational-and-scientific production complexes, such as “Neurosurgery”, “Urologist”, “Endocrinologist”, “Pharmanid”. They are headed by famous scientists — Academicians A. P. Romodanov, A. S. Yefimov and Corresponding Members of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences A. F. Vozianov and 1. S. Chekman. Strong professors' staff of the University makes it possible to provide high-level education, lo make fundamental researches, to implement the most progressive educational methods.

Scientific Research Division of the National Medical University headed by Honorary Worker of the Ukrainian Higher School, Prof V. G. Kolyadenko is aimed at researches of the world priorities.Activities of the Scientific-Research Laboratory Centre (SRLC), the 30th foundation anniversary of which was celebrated in 1992 (Chief — V. P. Yatsenko, laureate of State Premium, Professor), facilitate the deepening of scientific researches. The SRLC includes more than 30 structural divisions, such as Laboratory of pathological and experimental cardiology, Lab of eletron microscopy, Lab of metabolic and structural analysis, Lab of mathemetical modelling, Lab of experimental microbiology, Lab of immunology, Lab of virology and so on. In 1975 there was formed the Scientific-Research Sector which carries out various studies on contract basis.

The University carries out studies in several main directions.Among the programs which are beingworked out most actively is “Complex ecological program of studying the Chernobyl NPP accident consequences”.

In the field of cardiovascular pathology, the efforts are being made to work out and improve the methods for early diagnosis and treatment of ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and rheumatic diseases (Professors — V. Z. Netyazhenko, 1. 1. Sakharchuk, ë. í. Amosova).

In the field of conservative and surgical treatment of peptic ulcers, the methods are being developed for treatment and rehabilitation of both operated and non-operated patients with an account for the immune status of organism (V. D. Bratus, Corresponding Member of the Ukrainian Acad. Sci.; V. G. Perederiy, Prof.; T. D. Nikula, Prof). Scientists in dentistry have created an .experimental model for parodont diseases, theywere the first to utilize proteolytic enzymes, ultrasound and cryoeffect in the treatment of such diseases, and have developed surgical methods for managing congenital facial defects, an original technology for making dentures (Profs. M. F. Danilevsky, P. S. Flis).

In the field of maternity and childhood protection, the new methods are being worked out for fetal hypoxia prevention and for effective treatment of gynecological diseases. Besides, a Consultative Centre has been set up for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of immunodeficient conditions in children. The original methods for immunocorrection and rehabilitation of children with immune disorders have been developed and successfully implemented into clinical practice. (G. S. In the field of nature conservation, the University's scientists (Eu. G. Goncharuk, Academician; V. G. Bardov, Prof.; A. M. Shevehenko, Prof. et al.) have worked out and implemented new methods for sewage treatment as well as the recommendations on prevention of soil contamination with chemical products, toxic chemicals inclusive. On the National Medical University's initiative there were held several WHO Seminars on Sanitary aspects of sewage soil processing.

As a result of collective creative work of the University's scientists (under supervision of V. V. Gashinsky, Decent), Plastagar — a synthetic substitute for natural agar-agar — has been developed, on whose basis there have been produced nutrient media for cell culture as well as test-objects to control a quality of sterilization. A patent license was sold to Sweden where a company was established for the Plastagar media production. Altogether, these inventions have been patented in 24 countries — Germany, Hungary, USA, Great Britain, Japan, etc.

Over 100 certificated medical inventions are being made by the University's scientists annually.

Certain clinical Chairs of the University and the corresponding city's specialized hospitals have set up conjointly Scientific-and-Methodological Centres, such as Rheumalogical (V. Z. Netyazhenko, Prof.), Proctological (Yu. V. Baltaytis, Prof.), emergency care to patients with acute gastrointestinal hemorrhages as well as City's Urological (0. F. Vozianov, Academician) and Cardiological (K. M. Amosova, Prof.) Centres.

An implementation of the method for relapsing myocar-dial infarction prevention at the Cardiological Centre has resulted in twofold decrease in the disease relapses.

At the City's Urological Centre, students and specialist-urologists from all the Ukraine become skillful at ther-movision and ultrasound diagnosis of renal pathologies.

The implementation of scientific developments in the field of organ-preserving operations for ulceralive hemorrhages has enabled surgeons to fight uccessfully with this grave stomach pathology at City's Centre for Peptic Ulcer Surgery (V. D. Bratus, Corresponding Member of the Ukrainian Acad. Sci., Prof.; Fomin P. D„ Prof.)

Unter Prof. V. G. Kolyadenko's supervision the original efferent, immunocorrective and physiotherapeutic methods are being developed and implemented for the treatment of dermatoses (pemphigus, ichthyosis, vitiligo, alopecia, psoriasis, keloid scars, etc.) and of chronic inflammatory processes in the genitourintry organs (prostatites, urethrites).

The University's Student Scientific Society (scientific supervisor —V. Z. Netyazhenko, Prof.) is the oldest in this country and numbers about four thousand members at present. The students' scientific-research work has become part and parcel of the doctors' training system.

By efforts of the University's professors and workers, (under Prof. 0. A. Grando's supervision), there have been established Medicine Museum of Ukraine and Museum of the National Medical University. Fundamental Anatomical Museum (at the Chair ofAnatomy), museums of microscope's history and embryology (at the Chair of Histology) and Zoological museum (at the Chair of Biology) form a solid education basis.

The training process is supported by high-tech facilities. The University's labrary contains about a million volumes of scientific, educational and fiction literature. Presently, the University possesses strong training and scientific bases equipped with up-to-date facilities and devices.

There is a sport and recreation complex in the picturesque outskirts of Kiev where near 1150 students, teachers and employees have a rest every year. Their recreation is under a care of University's trade union committee headed by 0. G.Tyshko, Prof.
