Building Hack
To hack Caesar III, search the subdirectory where you installed the game (for example,
C:\Sierra\Caesar3\), and look for a file called c3_model.txt. Open the file in your favorite text viewer; it tells
you what each number stands for in regard to the game's buildings. You can now change the number of
people a building employs, its appeal to the community, and how much it costs. Lowering the number of
people employed in a building will still have the same effect on the game.

Instant Promotion
Build a well, then right-click on it. Press Alt-K on it, then use Alt-C to get a promotion to the next level.

Instant Victory
Build a well, right-click on it, press Alt-K, then Alt-V to achieve instant victory.

Instant Money
Build a well, right-click on it, press Alt-K, then Alt-C for more money. This will work only if you have less
than 5,000 denarii in your treasury.

Tips

Tip: Despite the cost and the labor required, it is always wise to build a hospital in your city. There's
nothing worse than having to watch your vigiles burn an entire neighborhood to the ground because the
plague victims have nowhere to go.

Tip: Trade is the only good and reliable way to make a province profitable. Choose a trade partner early,
and when possible try to pick someone who wants to buy finished goods--weapons, pottery, olive oil,
furniture--rather than the much cheaper raw materials.

Tip: Don't ignore religion, even if you're not much for it yourself. Remember to throw a small festival once
in a while and build temples as your population grows. The wrath of the gods is swift and very literal in this
game.

Tip: As the end of each year approaches, you can keep your prosperity rating on the rise by evicting tent
dwellers. Simply delete tents and forcibly evict the tenants. Your prosperity rating will go up, since the
ratio of higher-class housing to tent dwellers will now be much better. It's definitely a cruel way to control
your prosperity, but it's effective. Remember that nice governors finish last.

Tip: When the designers of Caesar III included speech in the game, it wasn't just for effect. Your citizens
will give important clues about how well your city is doing. Be sure to take time to listen to what they're
saying and respond with actions.

Tip: City walls with ballista towers are the most effective means of defense from invaders. It's a far more
effective strategy than sending out legions of troops to fight (and die). When building your exterior city
walls, however, be sure to leave enough space to expand your city.

Tip: When building your residential sections, place the housing in grids that are seven squares both tall
and wide. The middle nine squares should contain gardens, and the remaining "border" should be two
squares wide and contain housing units.

Tip: Be sure to download Impressions Software's enhancement package for the game. It includes several
fixes and new features not included with the original game.

Tip: Caesar III has numerous overlays for monitoring the health of your city, but none are as important for
planning as the water overlay. Your citizens desire fountain water for drinking, and the water overlay helps
you determine where to place them. Select Water from the overlay menu or press the W key.
