The Brazilian women's national team kicked-off their quest for the World Cup title it true samba style with playmaker Sissi the central figure in a team full of great technical ability. Both teams scored early but Brazil proved too strong for the Mexicans with the scoreboard 5-1 at the break. Hat-tricks by the left footed Sissi and Pretinha and a converted penalty by Katia sealed Mexico's fate.

The game began cautiously with Germany enjoying the bulk of possession but creating few clear-cut chances. However, it was Italy who went ahead through a close-range header from Panico. After the break, both sides continue to strike each hitting the crossbar and Italy riding their luck in a couple of goal-mouth scrambles. Germany's pressure bore fruit when Prinz won a penalty that Wiegmann coolly converted. The game flowed from then on although chances were limited to long distance shots.

Playmaker Sissi was again the key element in a strong Brazilian team: After scoring 3 goals in the first match against Mexico the midfielder scored 2 more goals against Italy. The #10 of Brazil opened the score in the 3rd minute. After a difficult first 20 minutes, Italy came better into the match and started to dominate. Captain Antonella Carta had the big chance to equalise after 32 minutes but saw her penalty kick stopped by Maravilha. Italy continued to create scoring opportunities but it was Sissi once again who scored after 63 minutes.

On a slippery pitch, Germany dominated possession but struggled to translate their superiority into goals. Smisek's follow-up after a partial clearance by the Mexican defence came at the perfect time, doubling their lead after Grings's early volley. The Mexicans defended bravely and tried to attack on the break but their technique let them down. After the break, only acrobatic heroics by keeper Quiсones held the rampant Germans at bay. An excellent move created Hingst's goal then Grings got her second and substitute Linger scored with a sweet drive. Grings completed her hat-trick in injury time.
