In the first game of Group D play, China improved its record in World Cup play against Sweden to 1-1-1 with a 2-1 victory Saturday at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. Sweden struck first in the 2nd minute with an unassisted goal by midfielder Kristin Bengtsson. The goal was the second fastest goal in World Cup history. China forward Yan Zin finished the equaliser in the 17th minute off a header from a corner-kick from midfielder Ying Liu. In the 69th minute, China went ahead 2-1. Liu chipped over Swedish keeper Karlsson for her team-leading sixth World Cup goal in her third World Cup.

In their first appearance at an important international tournament, Ghana's Black Queen's impressed with a great fighting spirit. Australia dominated the game from the start but failed to capitalise when the African team was reduced to 10 after 26 minutes, needing 74 minutes to open the score. Australia's advantage was short-lived when substitute Nana Gyamfua equalised two minutes later.

A fast, skilful game saw Australia initially dominated by a fast moving Swedish side. An early goal by Tornqvist followed by another from 19 year old Ljungberg underlined the Swedes' domination Australia started to stage a fight back finding form gradually and were rewarded with a fine goal from captain Julie Murray. However, another impressive goal from the dominant Ljungberg left no doubt as to the final result.

A red card for Alicia Ferguson for a foul from behind in the second minute left ten Australians with an uphill fight, but despite Wen Sun's two goals six minutes either side of half-time, the game stayed open well into the second half. But although Cheryl Salisbury reduced the deficit, a third Chinese goal left the Aussies without the strength to get back into the game again, as the Chinese remained in control and coasted into the last eight.

Victoria Svensson scored both goals for Sweden in the 58th and 86th minutes to lead the Swedish National Team to a 2-0 victory over Ghana Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago. Ghana goalkeeper Memunatu Sulemana's exceptional first-half performance denied Sweden several opportunities, but Svensson's consistent threat to Ghana's side resulted triumphant. Sulemana also made a wonderful save on Malin Andersson's penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
